We last visited the city in 2006 and there have been some changes since then. We will be concentrating on the inner city area and looking for the evidence of some of the city’s important trades.
It was not an idle boast that Birmingham came to be known as ‘the city of a thousand trades’. If an object was made of metal, it was probably made somewhere in the city. We will be looking at the buildings associated with jewellery, pens and guns among others, and also examining the commercial and civic buildings old and new. Both canals and railways were important, and we will be including them in our itinerary. We hope to include a visit to one of the preserved workshops in the city which is now a museum.
